Overview

This project involved a full bathroom upgrade and internal modifications to improve accessibility, functionality, and compliance within an existing residential dwelling in Tallebudgera.

Works were delivered in line with NDIS requirements and Australian Standards, requiring careful planning, multi-trade coordination, and staged delivery to achieve a compliant and functional outcome.

The Challenge

Accessible bathroom upgrades require more than standard renovation works. Key challenges included:

  • Modifying the existing layout to suit accessibility requirements
  • Achieving compliant floor falls and wet area performance
  • Integrating specialist fixtures and fittings
  • Coordinating structural, plumbing, electrical, and finishing trades
  • Managing demolition and potential hazardous materials (including asbestos)

The project required a coordinated approach to ensure all elements aligned with compliance standards while maintaining build quality.

Scope of Works

Preliminaries & Compliance

  • Engineering, drafting, and approvals
  • Project management and QA documentation
  • Site setup, waste removal, and final clean

Demolition & Preparation

  • Removal of existing bathroom fixtures, linings, and flooring
  • Disconnection and reconnection of services
  • Asbestos testing and removal where required

Carpentry & Structural Adjustments

  • Wall modifications and doorway widening (920mm compliant access)
  • Installation of structural supports and wall backing
  • Floor modification to achieve compliant falls
  • Installation of grab rails and accessibility fixtures

Plumbing

  • Full reconfiguration of pipework to suit new layout
  • Installation of accessible fixtures, mixers, and bidet system
  • Thermostatic mixing valve installation for safety compliance
  • Drainage modifications to suit new wet area design

Electrical

  • Reconfiguration of lighting, switches, and power
  • Installation of exhaust systems and additional GPOs

Finishes

  • Waterproofing to full wet area
  • Installation of compliant floor tiling (AS 1428.1)
  • Plastering, painting, and finishing works
  • Flooring and adjoining room reinstatement
